Kendrick Lamar has been taking the world by storm with his unique yet varied music style and incredible lyrics, earning himself a hefty seven Grammy awards and assertions that he’s one of the greatest rappers of all time. K-Dot delivered on the hype this weekend by tearing up The Global Citizen Music Festival in Central Park NYC. Kendrick headlined the one-day event along with Rihanna, Metallica, Major Lazer, and Demi Lovato.
Lamar made an unsurprisingly dope entrance, dropping the track ‘Levitate’ and capped off the performance with one of his many masterpieces, ‘Alright’. A line-up of fresh tracks were found inbetween, including ‘Money Trees’, ‘King Kunta’, ‘Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe’ and even a rendition of Schoolboy Q’s ‘THat Part’. The backdrop to K-Dot was the George Clinton quote “Look both ways before you cross my mind” – his quote is featured in the killer track, ‘Wesley’s Theory’ from To Pimp a Butterfly.
Kendrick grew up in Compton and has not forgotten about the community he was raised by. The rapper contributes greatly to the education and empowerment of the young people from his community, so it comes as no surprise that he headlined the charitable event.
The event aims to make itself accessible to all, allowing people from around the world to stream the festival live. Luckily for us, that means we can watch Kendrick’s performance over and over until we are convinced we actually attended the event. Check out his whole set above.
